SAT stands for “Scholastic Aptitude Test.” It is a test that was developed and is administered by the College Board, which is a non-profit organization in the United States. The SAT is one of the exams many high school students take as part of their college entrance requirement. ACT (American College Testing) is another test that some students take in place of the SAT. The test scores for the SAT range on a scale from 600 to a 2400, which is equivalent to a 36 on the ACT. For most large State Universities the SAT score is as important as your GPA, each accounting almost 35% of the selection criteria! For small liberal arts colleges, usually personal attributes account for 50% of the selection criteria and GPA and SAT each accounts 25% of selection criteria. Many schools also use the SAT score as one of the criteria for giving out scholarships during the college entrance process.
The SAT consists of three 800 point sections: Mathematics, Writing and Critical Reading. Each section is scored from 200-800 points, so you get 600 points simply for showing up and trying. The national average SAT score is about 1500. The average score for each of the three sections, math, writing and critical reading, is about 500.
SAT scores offer invaluable and attractive metric that is considered by colleges who tend to award scholarship. Many colleges rely heavily on the SAT score in determining the eligibility of a student for financial aid. Often students with average SAT scores do not get a chance to enroll in good colleges. To have a better chance of getting into competitive colleges a score of above 1500 is required. Therefore, it is important to study to earn a better score. Some of the reasons for not getting a high score in the SAT test are:
• Students do not know the strategies behind taking the SAT exam
• Students do not know the basic concepts well
• Students have not practiced enough
• Students may have difficulty in understanding challenging questions
It is highly recommended to take the test more than once. In fact most students may not get a good score the first time. However, after becoming familiar with the test, studying, and taking SAT prep classes they often see improvement in their SAT scores. Here are some ways you can improve your SAT score:
• Learn the directions for all 8 types of questions
• Try and answer all the easy and medium questions quickly leaving time to answer the more difficult questions!
• Slow down, score higher!
• Read problems carefully—AVOID careless errors!
• Learn and apply the strategies that are taught in prep classes
The ideal time to take the SAT is when a student is in 10th grade. Taking the SAT early provides the student the opportunity to learn strategies, shortcut, and concepts and have time to practice to improve skills.
