Being a Computer Programmer aka a Software Engineer is very rewarding. However it is very challenging today because technology is rapidly changing you will need to update your skills all the time.
To get started you will choose the technology and language you want to work with. For example Microsoft .Net is a popular platform.
There are a lot of resources available for learning .Net. There are video tutorials and books. Best way will be to get Step by Step series and go through tutorials.

Becoming a programmer is rewarding but requires constant study as software changes too rapidly. You may soon be out of market if you have not updated your skills for more than 5 years.
If you were interested in becoming a programmer I suggest you take a 2-3 months training, preferably with an indian company. Often times they will try to place you but more importantly they will support you on the job for few moths until you get up and running. They will take a cut from your salary for these services.
If you are a starter getting job in east and west coast may be hard due to competition. Be prepared to relocate to any place in USA where you could get a job. Once you have gained necessary experience you will be in better position to choose location.

In my opinion, the best way is to go for a diploma/bachelor's degree in Software Programming, so to learn the basic building blocks in more detail, after that you can switch to any programming language with little adjustment. Also getting a degree also helps in longer run and land a job in a good firm.
Just my 2 cents.
